Welcome to Day 3 of our goat spotlight week. Today we are setting the record straight on one of the most persistent, widespread myths in animal history: the idea that goats eat tin cans, cardboard boxes, and trash.

Pop culture portrays goats as mindless trash compactors willing to gobble down anything in sight. The reality is far more interesting. Goats are actually highly selective, gourmet browsers with specialized dietary habits that keep ecosystems healthy.

Debunking the Tin Can Myth

Where did the tin can story come from in the first place?

The myth likely started from watching goats nibble on paper labels attached to tin cans. As we explored in yesterday’s post, goats investigate their world using their prehensile, highly sensitive lips and tongues. When a goat licks a tin can, it is not trying to digest metal. It is attracted to the tasty starch-based paste used to glue paper labels to the metal, or simply exploring a novel texture in its environment.

If a goat were to ingest metal, wire, or plastic, it could suffer severe internal injury or fatal digestive blockages.

Browsers, Not Grazers

Many people lump goats in with sheep and cattle, assuming they eat grass all day. In biological terms, sheep and cows are grazers, meaning they eat low-lying grass from the ground. Goats, however, are natural browsers.

A browser prefers to feed at eye level or higher, reaching up into shrubs, tree branches, vines, and tall weeds. In the wild, this feeding habit allows goats to eat nutrient-rich leaves, shoots, bark, and seed pods while avoiding soil-borne parasites found close to the ground.

Their narrow, agile muzzles and split upper lips allow them to carefully pick individual leaves off thorny bushes like blackberries, multi-flora rose, and poison ivy without getting hurt.

Built for Tough Vegetation

How can goats eat plants that give humans painful rashes or digest woody plant stems that would make other animals sick?

Goats possess specialized enzymes in their saliva that help neutralize tannins and toxins found in bitter plants. Furthermore, their four-chambered stomach acts as a powerful fermentation vat. Specialized microbes inside the rumen break down tough cellulose and fibers, turning woody brush into usable energy and protein.

This unique ability to process undesirable plants makes goats invaluable partners in sustainable land management, weed control, and habitat restoration.
