Unpacking donations at our foundation is usually a time of logistical sorting, but today was entirely different. As I sat unpacking boxes and bags, I found myself completely overwhelmed, tears streaming down my face. You see, today we processed a donation that carries a profound weight of love, heartbreak, and pure selflessness.
This incredible contribution came to us because a family recently had to say goodbye to their beloved dog, Bud. Reading through the emails, I could feel the immense depth of their grief, but even more powerfully, I could feel the staggering amount of love they poured into Bud’s life.
Bud’s journey started as a rescue himself. Over the last several months, as Bud navigated complex GI issues that required specialized care and prescription diets, his family rallied around him with everything they had. When his health ultimately declined, they made the heartbreaking choice to let him go. Facing a home filled with the heavy reminders of a cherished companion, his family decided they wanted Bud’s memory to live on by helping other animals.
Instead of letting unused prescription foods, medications, and care supplies sit or go to waste, the family brought them all to our foundation. As I unpacked each item—from unopened specialized foods and care products to a massive collection of empty prescription bottles destined to become upcycled toys—I could physically feel the care and devotion woven into every single piece. They even included wonderful brand-new items because they simply loved spoiling him rotten.
As the founder, sitting here and going through every single piece of this donation has touched me in a way I cannot fully put into words. Feeling the physical traces of their loss and the deep intentionality behind every item left me legitimately crying at my desk. This is why we do what we do. Losses like this break our hearts, but the way this family chose to channel their grief into compassion reminds me of the true heartbeat of our mission.
For the families and pets who will receive these items, this donation is going to mean the world. It will provide high-grade prescription nutrition and vital care supplies that might otherwise have been financially out of reach, lifting a heavy burden off owners who want nothing more than to give their companions the best life possible. Every time these supplies bless another animal’s life, Bud’s legacy of being deeply loved as a rescue-turned-family-member continues.
