The Ultimate One-Piece Outfit
As leopard geckos grow, they regularly shed their skin in one complete piece. Right before shedding, their vibrant colors fade into a dull, milky white, making them look like they are wearing oversized, pale pajamas.
To peel off the old layer, the gecko uses its mouth to carefully pull, tug, and loosen the skin, working from snout to tail. But instead of leaving behind a trail of peeled skin for predators to trace back to their hideout, leopard geckos eat their old shed! This clever habit recycles valuable nutrients and leaves zero evidence behind for desert trackers.
Squeaks, Chirps, and Sassy Barks
While many lizards communicate purely through body language, leopard geckos possess a surprisingly varied vocal range. When they feel startled, defensive, or simply annoyed at being interrupted during a nap, they can produce sharp squeaks, loud chirps, and even tiny, high-pitched barks.
Younger geckos are especially famous for dramatic vocal displays, raising up on all four legs and letting out a tiny “roar” to make themselves look fierce.
