Land of Misfit Toys

Adoption Policy: The Thicket; Land of Misfit Toys (Cats & Dogs)

Welcome to the adoption portal for The Thicket; Land of Misfit Toys, our specialized companion animal division here in Hastings, Minnesota. We operate with a deep commitment to animal welfare, responsible stewardship, and lifelong placement. Because we do not operate a traditional physical storefront, our adoption process is coordinated through community outreach, secure virtual consultations, and direct placement into permanent homes.

1. The Philosophy of Companion Animal Placement

Every cat and dog in our care receives complete medical evaluations, behavioral assessments, and nutritional stabilization before becoming available for adoption. We prioritize thorough matches to ensure that our rescued companions transition into stable environments suited to their specific temperaments, activity levels, and medical needs.

2. Adopter Vetting & Household Compatibility Standards

To ensure a successful match between our community members and our resident cats and dogs, our team evaluates potential adopters based on stable housing environments, household dynamics, and species-appropriate knowledge.

  • Adopters must provide verification of pet-friendly housing policies if renting, including landlord approval where applicable.
  • Evaluations include household compatibility checks, such as secure fencing requirements for dogs and indoor-only lifestyle mandates or safe enclosure plans for cats.
  • Introductions to existing household pets are coordinated carefully to ensure seamless integration.

3. Medical Compliance & Spay/Neuter Mandates

All cats and dogs adopted through our program are up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations and parasite prevention.

  • For animals adopted prior to reaching maturity, the contract specifies a firm deadline for spaying or neutering, requiring written proof from a licensed veterinarian.
  • Adopters assume full responsibility for ongoing veterinary care, routine wellness exams, and municipal licensing compliance in accordance with Hastings and Dakota County ordinances.

4. Adoption Fees & Community Impact

Unlike standard retail transactions, our adoption fees are structured as reduced Legacy Fees—typically 25 to 50 percent of retail value—reflecting our mission to remove financial barriers for dedicated pet keepers. One hundred percent of all adoption and Legacy Fees go directly back into funding the Foundation’s Zero-Cost Pet Pantry and emergency community medical programs. Please note that all adoption fees are final and non-refundable.

5. The Lifelong Return Policy & Accountability

The Paws Claws and Talons Foundation maintains a lifelong commitment to every animal in our care. If an adopter’s circumstances change and they are no longer able to care for the pet, the animal must be returned directly to the Foundation. Animals adopted through our program may never be resold, privately rehomed, or surrendered to external shelters, ensuring uninterrupted lifetime protection and accountability. Please note that no refund or store credit will be issued when an animal is returned to us.
