An Inside Look at the Mission of Paws, Claws, and Talons

Behind closed doors in Hastings, a mission is quietly taking shape — one built on compassion, sustainability, and the belief that no family should lose a pet because life got hard. The lights aren’t on yet, the shelves aren’t stocked, and the doors remain closed to the public, but the work of Paws, Claws, and Talons has already begun.
At the heart of this mission is the soon‑to‑open Community Resource Wing, designed to feel less like a charity and more like a place of dignity and hope. Restored crates, cages, and essential supplies will line the walls, each one donated, sanitized, and prepared to support a family in need. The Zero‑Cost Pantry will ensure that no pet goes hungry, while the Re‑Tail section will give gently used gear a second life in a home that needs it most.
Just steps away, the not‑yet‑announced pet shop will serve as a benefactor to the mission, offering steady support rather than acting as a financial engine. Every purchase — from a bag of bedding to a full habitat setup — will help uplift the nonprofit next door through voluntary contributions, round‑ups, and shared community initiatives. Shoppers will be able to browse shelves that highlight real‑time needs, support emergency care through small add‑ons, and see success stories displayed right in the front windows. Even before the doors open, this partnership is already shaping a new kind of community‑powered support.
Behind the scenes, volunteers will bring donated items back to life in the Restoration Lab, using industrial sanitation, repairs, and a lot of heart. Some pieces will be transformed into handcrafted goods; others will go straight to families who thought they had run out of options.
And for those experiencing the loss of a beloved pet, the Legacy of Life Program will offer a gentle way forward. Through Compassionate Intake, a pet’s items can be quietly picked up, restored with care, and passed on with a small “In Memory of [Pet’s Name]” tag — a final act of love that becomes a lifeline for another.
The mission extends beyond supplies. The Emergency Pet Fund will be ready to step in when a sudden medical crisis threatens to separate a family from their pet. The Paws‑itive Bakery will craft species‑specific treats that support the fund and comfort pets in transition. Wellness pop‑ups, Fresh Start Kits, Emergency Homeless Packs, and Pantry‑to‑Porch delivery for homebound owners are all being built with intention and compassion.
This is the work happening before the doors open — the quiet, foundational labor that ensures every creature, whether covered in fur, feathers, or scales, will have a place where their story can take a gentler turn.
Soon, Hastings will have a place where no pet is left behind because of temporary hardship.
Soon, families will have somewhere to turn when life becomes overwhelming.
Soon, Paws, Claws, and Talons will open its doors — and the mission will finally be visible to all.
