Turning “Extra” into Gold

At the Paws Claws and Talons Foundation, we see the hidden value in things others might throw away. This specific collection is dedicated to fueling our high-energy composting systems. By donating these scraps, you are providing the raw energy needed to create the nutrient-rich soil that eventually grows our fresh “Hero Crops” like lavender, mint, and rosemary.

The Green Layer: Nitrogen-Rich Scraps

These kitchen leftovers provide the essential “green” energy that kicks our composting process into high gear. They break down quickly to feed the microorganisms in our soil.

  • Vegetable Scraps: Send us your leafy carrot tops, broccoli stalks, lettuce hearts, and squash peels.
  • Fruit Remains: Apple cores (the worms love these), banana peels, and melon rinds are perfect for adding moisture and nutrients.
  • Eggshells: Crushed eggshells are a fantastic source of calcium, helping us build strong, healthy soil for our indoor garden.

The Brown Layer: Carbon-Rich Foundations

Every healthy compost pile needs “browns” to keep the air flowing and the smell fresh. These dry materials are the structural backbone of our soil production.

  • Dried Leaves and Straw: The crunchier the better! We use these to balance out the wet kitchen scraps.
  • Coffee Grounds and Paper Filters: Coffee is a secret weapon for compost. It adds nitrogen while the paper filters provide great carbon bulk for the pile.

The All-Animal Compost List

Beyond the basics, we accept a variety of organic materials that are factually beneficial for a thriving, biodiverse compost system:

  • Old Herb Trimmings: Any wilted or dried-up herbs from your kitchen.
  • Corn Cobs and Husks: These take a little longer to break down, providing long-term structure to the soil.
  • Used Tea Bags: As long as they are made of paper or natural fibers, these are great additions.
  • Nut Shells: Peanut or walnut shells (crushed if possible) add excellent drainage to our finished soil.

By contributing to our Reclaimed Assets list, you are helping us close the loop on waste and turn kitchen leftovers into the literal foundation of our sanctuary’s nutrition. Your scraps are the fuel that keeps our biological engine running.
