Meet Pepsi, the pint-sized Roborovski hamster who proves that big personalities come in microscopic packages. Officially classified as Phodopus roborovskii, Robos are the smallest of all dwarf hamster breeds, typically measuring a mere two inches in length. Pepsi has an extra-special feature that makes him stand out from his family. When he was a very young pup, he took an unfortunate tumble and severely injured his left eye. Thanks to months of intensive, daily medical drops and dedicated care from his Chaos Wranglers, he healed beautifully. Today, he sports a permanent, rakish little squint. If you are looking at a fast-moving blur of identical brothers, just look for the one giving you the permanent pirate wink—that is Pepsi.

Speaking of his brothers, Pepsi has been happily rooming with his boy squad since they were just six weeks old. While most hamster species—like the larger Syrian hamster—are strictly solitary and will fight to the death if housed together, Roborovskis are uniquely social. In their native habitats across the harsh, arid deserts of Mongolia and Northern China, staying in family groups helps them survive. However, as Pepsi and his brothers fast approach their golden years, that natural roommate bliss can start to wane. The “bachelor pad” lifestyle is perfectly safe for now, but his caretakers are keeping a close watch, as aging Robos sometimes decide the social life is over and it is finally time to retire to their own private retirement villas.

When it comes to playtime, Pepsi has invented his own chaotic version of Peek-a-boo that showcases the mind-boggling speed of his species. In the wild, Roborovskis are prey animals who must escape predators by darting under sparse desert scrub, and they can run the equivalent of four human marathons in a single night. Pepsi brings that ancient instinct straight to your lap. He loves to bury himself completely underneath a cloth and wait in suspense. The moment you lift the corners, he scampers away at Mach speed, only to instantly hide in a different spot for you to find him again. If you don’t lift it fast enough, he will start scratch-mining around to let you know he is waiting.

He is incredibly sweet, but that childhood eye injury left him with no depth perception. Because hamsters already have naturally poor eyesight and rely heavily on their whiskers and scent glands to navigate, Pepsi operates with a hilarious, fearless amount of confidence. He is famous for walking right off the edges of tables without a care in the world, completely unaware of the drop. He is a tiny, winking daredevil who plays by his own rules, relying on his human companions to be his safety net while he lives life one high-speed game of hide-and-seek at a time.
